Establishment of a medical research centre as one of the three pillars of KCMC was conceived wayback in 1978. The delay in establishing the proposed centre was attributed to a number of factors including the lack adequate number of research personnel and infrastructure. To achieve that goal therefore a number of research programs were established in KCMC in collaboration with various institutions, notably the Duke, Havard, Virginia, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Bergen Universities. The KCMC-RUNMC collaboration through the APRIORI Program brought back the original idea of establishing a medical research centre by supporting infrastructure and human capacity development for the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Centre (KCRC). The KCRC later evolved into the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute (KCRI) thus completing the three pillars of the KCMC, i.e. Patient care (hospital), Training (College and Allied Schools) and Research (KCRI).
