INTRODUCTION
The Radiology Department came up immediately with the inauguration of
KCMC in 1971. It is located on the ground floor of the of the three story
hospital building close to the Casualty Department and the outpatients
clinics.
MISSION
The mission of the Radiology Department is to carry out the functions
of health service, teaching, research and consultancy in Christian principles
in a dignified, sustainable and affordable manner and facilitate an efficient
medical imaging development in collaboration with all stakeholders.

SERVICES PROVIDED
Services to in and outpatients are rendered through the following procedures
- Conventional radiography.
- Fluoroscopy and contrast studies.
- Diagnostic Mammography.
- Ultrasonography, ultrasound guided
biopsies and Echocardiography.
- Computed Axial Tomography (CAT).

On average, the department does 80 X-ray
examinations, 5 CATs and 48 ultrasound scans daily.
STAFF
We have one Consultant radiologist, three specialist radiologists, seven
radiographers, one secretary, one nurse midwife and four health attendants.
Nine MMed residents and nine AMO radiologists'
trainees make the complete personnel list in the department.
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION
The Department collaborates with various local and foreign institutions/organizations
in providing service to the patients, teaching, research activities and
capacity building. Such groups include:
- Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission in
Arusha, Tanzania.
- Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Dar-es-salaam,
Tanzania.
- East Africa Medical Foundation.
- Rotary Doctor Bank of Great Britain
and Wales.
- Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust
in England.
- North Tyneside General Hospital in
Northumbria, England and
- Haraldsplass Hospital in Bergen, Norway.
- Bergen University College, Department

FUTURE PLANS
1. To provide new services such as Screening Mammography, vascular and
Interventional Radiology singly or in collaboration with other stakeholders
local or international.
2. Furtherance of training in MMed Radiology and introduction of a three-year
Diploma in Diagnostic Radiography course.
3. Installation of Teleradiology services.
4. An electronic film library of high quality images of X-ray, CAT and
ultrasound images is being created and made available to staff, students
and graduates. Up to now we have 950 images.
