Introduction and Background Information

The department of obstetrics and gynecology has been established since the inauguration of the hospital 1971. Under the umbrella of the Good Samaritan Foundation, the department of obstetrics and gynecology focuses on all major and minor issues pertaining the health of women. KCMC being a zonal tertiary regional referral hospital, the department of Obs & Gyn carters for all patient within Kilimanjaro region and neighboring regions such as Arusha, Tanga, Manyara and Shinyanga but also, we have been receiving patients from all over the Country and Neighboring Countries like Kenya and Uganda.

The department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 2 major sections, which are Inpatient and Outpatient departments. These sections are further divided into 6 minor sections on basis of the services offered. These include;

Units/Sections Within The Department

A. Inpatient Unit

➤ Obstetrics Ward

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conduct all deliveries at labor ward for both normal and surgical deliveries.
2. Care for all pregnant women with conditions that require admission such as hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, women with fetal congenital malformations etc.
3. Offer comprehensive obstetric care for women that have delivered such as family planning etc.

➤ Gynecology Ward

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conduct and care for all gynecologic surgical emergencies.
2. Care for all women related illness that require admissions.
3. Offer open and minimum invasive surgical support for all women with gynecology related illness.
4. Care for all women with gynecology related end stage diseases that require admission such as ovarian cancer, cervical cancer etc.

B. Outpatient Unit

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Offer outpatient visits to all women seeking ANC.
2. Offer outpatient visits for all patients/ women that has been discharged and require follow-up visits post discharge.
3. Attend and schedule all women that require admission for electives surgeries.

➤ Reproductive Health Center

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Offer free screening and pre invasive services and management for breast and cervical cancer.
2. Offer services for HIV testing and counselling.
3. Offer reproductive health education to all women and partner that attend the clinic.

➤ Infertility Center

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Evaluate causes for both male and female infertility.
2. Provide schedules for admission to all women that require surgical interventions for issues of infertility.
3. Offer follow-up visits for all women that are on medications.

➤ Outreach Department

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Offer outreach campaign on health education and need for intervention for treatable conditions.
2. Offer expertise and training for facility surrounding KCMC as part of CME.
