Basic Information about Tanzania Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. Malaria, AIDS and poverty-related diseases are among the main causes of illness and death. The recent United Nations Development Programme's 1998 Human Development Report indicates that Tanzanian human welfare status is on the decline. Life expectancy declined from 56 years at the beginning of the decade to 51 years today. The gross school enrolment has also declined from 44% in 1980 to 34% in 1995, and Tanzania has the lowest University enrolment capacity in Eastern and Southern Africa. The doctor : patient ratio in Tanzania is 1 : 26,000, whereas the recommended rate is 1 : 7,500. Uganda's rate is 1 : 8,000 and Zambia's is 1: 11,000. KCM College aims to supplement the Government's efforts to meet the manpower needs of the health sector in order to achieve the improved health and well-being of all Tanzanians. Financial Position The Government provides the salaries of staff working at KCMC, and finances some of the hospital's running costs. Government policy now demands cost-sharing fees to be paid by patients to help meet healthcare costs. KCMC has also started income-generating schemes to help combat spiralling costs. Capital and many other costs at KCMC are met by various donor agencies. The running costs of the Faculties and the Institute of Postgraduate Studies are met from student fees, and students have to find their own source of funding. In order to open the Medical College, the human and material resources of KCMC were put to maximum use. Renovations and alterations were made to the hospital buildings in order to provide temporary classrooms and laboratories for the College. The existing staff have been called upon to form the academic core for the new programmes. However, considerable additional resources are required to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Medical College, and to cope with the increasing number of students and postgraduate residents. How you can help Financial support for students and postgraduate residents to cover tuition fees is desperately needed. The average cost of one year's tuition is $5,000, with a further $2,000 required for accommodation and living expenses. A Scholarship Fund has been set up to channel donated funds for students most in need. The growing College needs its own accommodation within the KCMC campus. The hospital facilities are already stretched to their maximum capacity. College requirements include:
