KILIMANJARO CHRISTIAN MEDICAL CENTRE

Introduction
Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC Referral Hospital) was established to provide curative services to people suffering from various ailments

KCMC was established on the 6th of March 1971 to heal, train and researching so as to improve health services in Tanzania. Soon after independence the hospital was nationalized and taken by the government until1972 when it was handled back to the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF). Currently, the hospital operate through the Memorandum of understanding  (MoU) between GSF and the Government of Tanzania through its Ministry of Health and Social Welfare where the government responsibility is to pay all hospital running costs while GSF incurs expansion and renovation costs.

The hospital demands funds from individuals, groups, companies, governmental and non-governmental organization to confront challenging situation that it face like overcrowding in the wards by constructing new wards and renovating the old building which are our preference.

In the 2011 fundraising event, fundraising committee would like to raise 3 billion Tanzanians Shillings in order to improve its services by constructing new wards to reduce congestions, and renovate the old building

KCMC before and after 1990’s
Up to 1990’s the hospital was providing better services to patients as it had moderate number of patients admitted/attending clinics who were well managed  by our medical staff team.

Doctors had enough time to work (not overloaded) as it is today. Medical staff were only working for an average of 8 hours per day. The doctors had an opportunity of attending minimum number of 20 patients only while in these days one doctor may attend an average of 40 patients daily. Increases of the patients have been caused by motor traffic accident, existence of new diseases, shortage of experts and other medical staff.

Challenges

  1. Deterioration of the  40years old: The main building requires an urgent renovation
  2. Increase in number of patients:
    1. Outpatient: Attended outpatients had reached to 1000 per day in our clinics
    2. Inpatients: Number of admitted patients has increased in relation to the available wards. The hospital carrying capacity is 500 patients instead the number has gone up to 600
  3. Aging of hospital infrastructures  including wards, equipments
  4. Shortage of professional experts and modern equipments which ended to inefficiency
  5. Emergency of new cases like HIV/AIDS, Hypertension, TB, Cancer and Diabetic
  6. Overcrowding due to few available operating theaters: Motor Traffic Accident that occurs in between the main road from Dar es Salaam to Arusha has increased number of patients especially at orthopedic, surgical and urology.  In 2009 alone, there were over 800 major cases attended in the above clinics (KCMC Report, 2009)

Patient attended in a corridor

  1. Insufficient budget in relation to the actual demand: Operational and other administrative costs

How KCMC has managed to overcome the above challenges

  1. Using of flying doctors to visit nearby and out of the region hospitals to reduce congestion of patients at KCMC
  2. Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania established Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College, a constituent university of Tumaini University  13 years ago that has helped to increase number of professional doctors though not all are working with KCMC
  3. To confront new cases like HIV/AIDS, Trachoma, Malaria etc KCMC Hospital has introduced various research centres in collaboration with other partners like Duke University, Joint Malaria Project, KCCO, KCRI
  4. Outreach Programs through CCFCC, KCCO/Eye, Community Health
  5. KCMC also raised over 200 Million Tshs in 2008 but it was insufficient to cover all the demands as per our objective

Why fundraising from the community

Besides the efforts made by the KCMC Hospital the challenges are still increasing and KCMC thought of involving the community (Tanzanians and non-Tanzanians) to curtail the challenges due to the following

  1. KCMC is serving the community of Tanzanians and non-Tanzanians.
  2. It is because of the cost sharing policy that calls for the community to share in improving the health services
  3. KCMC would like to promote the sustainability quality health services in Tanzania

 Our demand

  1. Financial assistance: 3billion Tshs, for renovation and construction of medical ward in this second phase
  2. Equipments (building materials) like cement, iron bars,
  3. Human capital like engineers and other voluntary technical people
  4. If your organization is able to either renovate or construct a ward

How to Contribute

  1. Deposit your money at the National Microfinance Bank Account No 4036600264
