TRAINING

Basic sciences are very essential for clinical staff. For the trainees to be able to perform efficiently they need to master these subjects. The Clinical laboratory Department is involved in training activities both in the allied training courses as well as in the Tumaini University especially in undergraduate MD courses.

RESEARCH

The Clinical Laboratory is actively involved in research. The areas of interest are sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) including HIV, tuberculosis, helminthiasis, respiratory tract infections, among others. The Department has been able to produce a number of publications out of these research activities.


OUTREACH PROGRAMMES

The Clinical Laboratory is supporting laboratories in the periphery of the KCMC catchment area through supervisory visits, workshops etc. The CL is also involved in supply of reagents to the peripheral laboratories at a cost price as they can not afford to buy the reagents in bulk.
Technologists of the Clinical Laboratory join the AMREF Flying Doctors Outreach Programme from Nairobi regularly where they are engaged in training activities, minor equipment repairs, equipment calibration as well as advice on technical issues.

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS

As one of the Departments of the referral and teaching Hospital (KCMC), the CL is collaborating with other institutions These institutions include:

• Ministry of Health (DSM) - as a Parent Ministry.
• Royal Free Hospital (London) - Research especially on tuberculosis, HIV, respiratory tract infections and local staff training and sandwich programmes between CL/Tumaini University and Royal Free Hospital/University College of London.
  
• Bergen University (Norway) - Research on infectious diseases.
  
• Cordaid (The Netherlands) - Laboratory outreach programme.
  
• AMREF (Nairobi) - Flying Doctor services.
  
• London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (London) - Research especially on malaria.
  
• Boston University (US) - Research especially on STDs including HIV.
  
• NIMR (Dar es Salaam) - All research activities.
