DIAGNOSTIC & PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES

The CL is comprised of Biochemistry, Blood donor services, Haematology and Blood transfusion, Microbiology and Serology, and Parasitology disciplines.

(1)Biochemistry

The section is well equipped and facilitates all routine substrate and enzyme assays for organ function tests (kidney, liver etc). Blood gas and electrolyte analyses as well as thyroid ELISA assays are also performed.

(2)Blood Donor Services

The blood donor section is involved in recruiting donors, collecting donated blood and delivering it to the blood transfusion subunit.

(3)Haematology

Samples are routinely analysed by the semi-automated cell counter providing 17 blood parameters at the time. Additionally G-6PD, sickling test, haemoglobin electrophoresis, bone marrow aspirates are processed manually amongst other tests.

i Blood transfusion

This sub-section is part of the Haematology Section. It performs all tests as to secure a safe blood transfusion.

(4)Microbiology

This section comprises of the following sub-sections:

i Bacteriology / Mycology

All micro-organisms, which are related to human diseases, can be identified and their susceptibility to anti biotics revealed.

ii Serology

This section is performing all routine serological investigations for both screening blood units as well patient care such as anti-HIV, Hepatitis B antigen, syphilis and pregnancy tests. It also perform serological tests for research activities such as HIV screening and confirmation, chlamydia tests, and confirmation tests for syphilis.

iii Public Health

As a Public Health protective tool the subsection conducts microbiological tests on milk, water and industrial food for human consumption for possible pathogenic bacterial contamination. It is also involved in quality control of disinfectants.

iv TB microbiology

The TB Laboratory at KCMC is one of the three Zonal Tuberculosis Reference Laboratories in Tanzania and is incorporated in the Clinical Laboratory.

(5)Parasitology

Activities of this section are urinalysis and stool examination for intestinal parasites. Detecting haemoparasites makes this section an important one within the Clinical Laboratory.
