Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre is located in the foothills of the snow capped, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. It was opened in March 1971 by the Good Samaritan Foundation, who planned and raised large funds to build and equip it.

KCMC is a referral hospital for over 11 million people in Northern Tanzania. The hospital is a huge complex with over 450 beds, with hundreds of outpatients and visitors coming to the centre everyday. Over 1000 staff are employed at the centre

KCMC Annual report 2009:

(January – December 2009)

Introduction
When established in 1971, KCMC hospital was having a total bed capacity of 320, but due to increased number of patients the hospital was able to increase the number of beds up to 457.

Out-patient statistics
From the year 1971 – 2009, the number of patients attending KCMC hospital increased on daily basis, new registration of patients becoming higher leading to high overall patient’s attendances at KCMC hospital.

In-patient statistics
Number of patients admitted in the hospital increased yearly. The total bed capacity did not increase yearly; it increased in 3 phases between 1971 and 2009. This situation led to overcrowding in the hospital as shown by large percentage of bed occupancy. The turnover per bed was low which contributed also to overcrowding.
